Okay, So I'm Camera Shy

Air Kiss

I’ve always hated having my picture taken. My husband tends to get upset with me over my lack of enthusiasm about being photographed. It’s odd that I’m married to a multi-media professional and not anxious to participate in his zest for capturing the moment. I don’t understand why I should have to be subjected to something that disturbs me so much. When I was young and cute I still vehemently resisted being photographed. Now that I’m older—it’s even worse. I’ve been known to run from a camera. I’ve been known to hide behind whatever shield is at hand upon realizing that someone's about to shoot me. Click Click feels like Bang Bang. Consequently, and to my dear husband’s chagrin, we have way too many shots of me hiding behind newspapers and whatever else might be handy at the time.

You may think that I’m full of self-loathing. I am not. (I won’t go into my theory about just why I’m so damn camera shy, but it has to do with my mother, and I don’t believe this blogspot is the proper place to engage in self-therapy, so I’ll spare you readers by not going there.)

Imagine my resistance to attaching my image to my up-coming book, Boomer Tales, Please Stand By. "Why do I have to?" I asked, sounding like a whining fool. "Who gives a crap what I look like?" I said. I was forced to give in though. Seems people do care, or so I am told.

My daughter snapped this shot of me not long ago. Waiting for her in her car, I opened the door for a little air, leaned back, closed my eyes, and dozed off. I don’t know what possessed her to take my picture upon returning, but I heard the car door open, and then her voice calling, “Cheese.” So, as you can see, I sent her an air kiss.

I don’t hate this picture all that much. It wouldn’t suck if this were the only shot my daughter had to remember me by. At least there’s no newspaper between us.

I was just having a conversation with Hubby about this. He said; take lots of pictures and get Kat to take some with you in them, I said; you know I hate getting my picture taken because I am not and have never been photogenic!
Glad I'm not the only one camera shy!

I hear you Carol. Some people come alive in front of the camera, but some of us run.

Fun shot! Lots of personality in this!!! Most photos are so dull...maybe that's why you dislike them...so prosaic to have your photo taken...I hate it too...I can really relate to this post! ~Janine

Pictures can be so confining, frozen in time. This one is precious, though; you might enjoy how your children capture you.

I hear you. It's no fun being captured, 'cause that is what it feels like. But you, you look great.

This is a great photo of you. You look like a pro here. Look forward to the book photo. You know, I like having my photo taken, especially if there's a vacation spot I love behind and around me.

Elizabeth I am so with you. Lately there is a journalist pursuing me about an article that she needs a photo for. I have a few photos I give to people like that but apparently they are not good enough for her purposes. Last night I made my husband take photos until he got one I didn't hate, though I do look like I'm wearing a hair hat.:(

This photo of you is lovely! I think like Sniffles and Smiles has said, photos grab a bit of us not the whole package, and at least for me it is always the ugly bit.

I think you look great! Air kiss is a cute idea.

I used to hate getting my picture taken and then in college I did a little bit of promotional modeling (very low level) and so had to get some professional shots taken. They taught me to tilt my head slightly and to put my tongue pressed up against my two front teeth when I smile to look more natural. Anyhoo, now I know how and I feel better about it. Maybe you will feel the same after your photo shoot, too :)

Oh, Lauren, you are so cute, if I was you I'd be posing all the time.

Maybe the key is to have my daughter take the shot. Hee, hee. I just need to get over it already. Easier said than done though. Always.

Love the pic and the story, too. I'm sort of neutral about having my picture taken. Sort of depends on if my hair is perfect, which is never. lol Hope that you have a wonderful Mother's Day getaway.

You look MAH-velous!
I didn't want an author picture on my novel "Aloha Where You Like Go?" either.........Let our words and the readers imagination make of us what they wish!

I hate how I look in photos. In my mind, I am so much prettier and younger.

I think you look great in this shot! But I know how you feel about pictures - I always look awful.

my wife is exactly the same, she just wilts when a camera comes out. which of course i find bizarre because i have always found her incredibly lovely, but with some people of both genders the still photo just does not capture the beauty of a face in motion. some times the movement means everything.

Okay, tell your editors this -- some people are quite disappointed by the photos of their favorite authors and prefer to think of them as magical, dazzling demi-gods rather than perfectly ordinary human beings.
